Imagine how a Londoner, or any one from the UK for that matter, reacts to having a clogged drainage system or a leaking pipe flooding the house: panic is the word you are looking for. And in this hour of panic what homeowners seek is not only skilled plumber in London but also a reliable plumber in the UK.
And a Successful plumber is one who meets both the above criteria and more.
Here are few plumbing safety basics – Do’s and Don’ts – which when complied to can make you a successful plumber.
DO’s
- Make sure you are not violating any laws or codes: Before you start the job, acquire knowledge of building plumbing codes and laws, get a permit if required.
- Use safety goggles to shield your eyes: Hoping for the best, but being ready for the worst should always be your go-to mantra when it comes to safety. Dust and particles can easily find their way into your unwelcoming eyes while using a drill/sawzall OR working under a sink. Eyes are probably the most important sense, protect it.
- Wear gloves. Not only it insulates your hands from harmful chemicals but also protect them from being hurt on plumbing tools. Latex gloves are good to keep the spread of germs limited when unclogging sinks and drains.
- Chances are your job might requires drilling, sawing, sanding every once in a while. Do put on the mask to prevent inhalation of small particles released in the process.
- If you can get someone to help you as a spotter, please do it. An extra pair of hands makes the job quicker and safer. S/he can holds things in place or provide assistance when your both hands are occupied in operating a tool or fixing something.
- Before working with a chemicals or a machine for the first time, read and follow all recommendations, warnings and know how to handle emergency, should it arise.
Don’ts
- Don’t work when you are sick, tired or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Slow reflexes are a magnet to accidents and injuries. Be fully focused and fully aware before starting a project.
- Never use tools and equipment for purposes they aren’t meant. Inspect them properly before putting them to use. Improper handling or maintenance could easily lead to injury or damage.
- Refrain from carrying tools in your pocket, use a tool belt or box instead. With tools colliding with you or one another, you might get a cut or a bruise.
- Never ignore the smell of natural gas or sewer gas. Stop everything immediately. Turn off the gas and call the gas company. Don’t try to be a hero by attempting to plug the leak yourself.
You can never be too cautious while working as a plumber. More often than not a plumber is called in emergency situations and you must be very good with safety in order to be a certified emergency plumber everyone searches for.
