In this method, stones are not in shape or polished, and as such the elevation of this type of stone, masonry shows irregularly shaped stones with non-uniformed joints.
  • Square rubble – You can also call square rubble as rubblework. Squared rubble stone masonry is generally found in hilly areas with easily available quality and cheap stones.Squared rubble can comprise of several sized stones and can be placed in equal courses, coursed every third or fourth stone, or uncoursed.
  • Miscellaneous type rubble–This is a process of stones hammer finish off on the face to an unusual polygonal shape. If stones are nearly shaped to form rough fitting, such a work is called rough picked work. If stones are cautiouslycreated to form close fitting such a work is called close-picked work.
  • Flint rubble masonryFlint rubble masonry includes “flints or cobbles” as a main material which is vary in width and thickness of 7.5 cm to 15 cm and length vary from 15 cm to 30cms. The stones are exceptionally bard but fragile.
  • Dry rubble masonry– An expert and skilled stonemason does not use mortar in joints to construct dry rubble masonry, majorly this technique used for non-load bearing walls such as compound walls
  • Ashlar fine tooled–Ashlar fine tooled is known as one of the finest stone masonries.  The joints and edges of the stones are chisel dressed to eliminate all disparity and gainentirelyparallel and vertical joints.
  • Ashlar rock faced – The visibleside of the stones is not garbed but is maintained as it is to give rough facing.
  • Ashlar chamfered – It is a kind of ashlar rock-faced in which the slivergiven around the border of the exposed face is chamfered. This can be an angle of 45° to a depth of 25 mm.

Types of Stone used in Stonework

  • Igneous stonesThese stones are taken from igneous rocks, which is made of the cool and solid magma produced within the Earth at extreme temperatures all through volcanic action.
  • Sedimentary stones – They are developedby sedimentary stonewhich iscreated by growth and cementation of mineral particles (sediments) moved by wind, water, or ice to precipitation at a spot. There are mostly two types of sedimentary stones used in masonry work, limestone, and sandstone.
  • Metamorphic Stones – These stones are Preceding rocks which is modified by huge heat and pressure or by chemical environments.  They have conventionally been used for carving statues, and buildings. Slate and marble are metamorphic stones commonly used in the building industry.

Since we have discussed about the types of stonework and stones used in it. Let us put some light on its requirements. This can be categorized as per the structure appearance, hardness, weight etc.

  • Structural Appearance – When we talk about the structural appearance of stone it refers to smooth color which should be weather resistant and must be polishable.
  • Weight–Stones should be thick and less absorbent. It should have a precise gravity of 2.4 and 2.8 when used for roof covering. A gentler form of the stones is chosen.
  • Hardness – If you want to use stone in floors and pavements then it should be tough enough to observe the abrasive force which produced due to wear and friction. Even stone should bare the load of the moving machines over them.
  • Fire-resistance – You should choose the stones, such as “Limestone” which can bare up to a temperature of 800°C. Sandstone with silicates as a binding material has a capacity of fire-resistance very well.
